Notes from JVS Wine Imports
The sixth in Wolfburn’s small-batch series, Batch 318 comes from a combination of lightly-peated spirit, matured for seven years in first-fill Oloroso Sherry butts, combined with spirit matured for seven years in first-fill Bourbon barrels. Just 4,800 bottles in total. A sweet, rounded, sumptuous whisky with a peerless depth of flavor.
Bottled at 46% abv
ON THE NOSE
On the nose, figs and apricots mix with soft tones of peat smoke. There’s a hint of vanilla and Oak present too.
ON THE PALATE
On the palate the depth of flavor is tremendous. Honey-laced porridge meets stewed apples and sultanas. The peat brings with it a touch of heat, while soft Oak spices – cinnamon, cloves, and ginger are also present; all overlaid by a wonderful Sherry sweetness.
FINISH
The finish does not disappoint; dried fruit and caramel flavors remain to the end and are neatly overlaid with hints of lingering peat smoke.
About the producer
It has been a long time coming but as Wolfburn (re)opens its doors and fires up the stills, the next generation of Wolfburn whisky is slowly getting closer. The rebuilding is done, the new spirit is being made and laid down, now we’re just left with the hard part: the waiting. Some things may have changed since the last whisky was made in Thurso but the warm welcome for visitors to the lowlands beyond the highlands hasn’e and we look forward in the future to sharing some Wolfburn with you. A wee bit of history brought back to life, a wee bit of the spirit of the north.
