ORGANICALLY FARMED
60% Garnatxa, 40% Carinyena
Venus "La Universal" is a small production winery, operated by the wife & husband team Sara Perez and Rene Barbier. They seek to make traditionally-style wines of their place, but empowered by the renowned winemaking talents and experience of the duo. This is the flaghsip red for the winery, and elegant expression of Montsant's rustic wines of local Grenache and Carignan. Forest floor aromas, a tangy red-fruited entry, and a svelte mouthfeel distinguish this from the average of the area. The long, tapered, citrusy finish distinguishes it from the average of the world.
WINE ADVOCATE 95 POINTS - "The eponymous red 2018 Venus la Universal is a blend of old-vine Cariñena and Garnacha from six plots between the villages of Falset and Marçà on deep clay and limestone soils that have good humidity and allow for a long and slow ripening of the grapes, even more so in the cooler and wet 2018. 2018 wines show tension...very good complexity. In 2018 they started to do one year of foudre (after fermenting in oak vat) and one year in concrete, completing an élevage of 30 months. This is very relaxed, balanced, elegant and long, with only 13% alcohol. This is the wine that has changed the most; they harvested early to preserve the freshness after the extremely warm and ripe 2017. 13,000 bottles were filled in May 2021."
"Venus is the yearly result of our search for beauty. An attempt to understand the femininity, the land, through a bottle of wine...A juicy wine, mostly created to be paired with food, especially the Mediterranean traditional cuisine.
Grapes are processed as whole berries, and some stems from the Garnatxa. Fermentation starts with wild native yeast. We apply gentle pigeage during fermentation and maceration, that takes around 21 and 28 days in wood tanks. Venus is aged in a 4500L wood vat for 6 months and 12 more months in 2500L foudres." - WINERY NOTES
