It would be hard to argue the notion that no region in California does $20 Cabernet better than Paso Robles. We've featured other Paso producers in their early days that have gone on to become some of our top sellers, including the likes of McPrice Myers, Daou, and Fableist. But now, it's the full-bodied and full-flavored Cabernet Sauvignon from Tooth and Nail that is catching our attention. In fact, last year's rendidiong of this sub-$20 Cabernet received 92 points and it was a "showstopper"!
Founder and grape grower Rob Murray followed a path of true grit and determination to find success in Paso, and fought "tooth and nail" to make it happen. The wines he crafts with winemaker Jeremy Leffert embrace the ruggedness of this region, and truly show the quality of this region. From their sustainably grown Paso Robles vineyards, they utilize hand labor for weed abatement as an alternative to herbicides and practice deficit irrigation as a means to conserve water and heighten fruit quality. Plus, they pledge 1% of profits to "1% for the Planet"-a global initiative to benefit the environment and help grow a better world.
The result is Tooth and Nail's "Squad Series", a lineup of wines for those who inspire them most; their loyal followers. They took some of their better vineyard plots of Cabernet Sauvignon, aged it in 25% new French oak barrels for 10 months, and produced a wine that is sure to be a hit at your next dinner party, or barbeque with your "squad"!
The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon bursts from the glass with aromas of plum, black cherry, sandalwood and tobacco leaf. A luscious mouthfeel delivers velvety flavors of black fruits, boysenberry, crème de cassis, mocha and vanilla with hints of gravelly stone. Plump tannins unfold into a soft, enveloping finish.
