ORGANICALLY FARMED
KERIN O'KEEFE 92 POINTS - "Fragrant and refined, the straight Etna Rosso 2022 from Tenuta delle Terre Nere is fantastic, and even more amazing is that this is the firm’s entry level red. Made with Nerello Mascalese and a tiny percentage of Nerello Cappuccio, it opens with alluring scents of small red berry, wild herb, hay and spice while the smooth, savory palate features crushed raspberry, wild strawberry and baking spice. A saline tang signals the close while lithe tannins and fresh acidity keep it balanced. Drink through 2029. Abv: 14% Kerin O’Keefe July 2024 ©kerinokeefe.com"
VINOUS 92+ POINTS - "Incredibly spicy, the 2022 Etna Rosso bursts from the glass with a wild bouquet of cloves and incense, giving way to dried cherries and sage. This is silky-smooth, with cooling acidity lifting its dense core of ripe red berry fruits as crunchy mineral tones resonate throughout. The 2022 finishes impossibly long and staining yet only gently tannic, leaving a lovely air of lavender and cloves that echoes on. Terre Nere continues to raise the bar with their Etna Rosso; it now has its own barrel-aging facility, which has allowed them to keep the wine in barrel between 14 to 16 months. " - Eric Guido
All properties of Tenuta delle Terre Nere have been cultivated organically from the very beginning in 2002. And the vineyards first acquired had been managed organically for two generations of the previous owners. In 2009 we built a solar panel unit designed to deliver renewable energy sufficient for 80% of our needs. The unit was complemented in 2010 by a furnace fueled with the cuttings from the yearly pruning on 1600 olive trees and maintenance pruning of other hundreds of trees on the properties. In 2010 we were certified organic, a request made mostly in order to satisfy many of our customer’s demands. Vineyard sprays: copper sulphate, sulphur. Fertilization: all organic, mostly manure or manure based. Practice of “green manure”, growing leguminous plants (beans, lentils, chich peas, etc.) rich in nitrogen between alternate rows, turning them over and folding them into the soil. The grapes are macerated until the end of fermentation. The wine then continues its life in wood until bottled roughly one year after harvest. Even young it is a distinguished wine. Fresh, fragrant, beautifully slender and with a fine grip, it has a natural polish, a stage presence, as it were. And, in aging, as its weave gathers into rich complexity, it is a wine for gentlemen. It is an aristocratically liberal wine: enjoy it with whatever food you wish, as long as its properly cooked.
