Stuart Spencer took over winemaking duties at St. Amant Winery when his father, Tim, passed away in 2006. His mother Barbara St. Amant Spencer, who founded the winery with her husband in 1972, continues to manage and operate their tasting room, manages the winery finances and represents the winery at wine events throughout the region. The quality of the wines continues to shine, as does their pride in Lodi and Amador County.
Stuart decided to plant Cabernet Sauvignon in their vineyard in 2012, despite knowing that his father might be "...rolling in his grave..." at that thought. It wasn't that it made bad wine; it was more the thought of it being "...overplayed and symbolized all that can be wrong in the wine business." Despite these misgivings, Stuart made the call and this bottling is the second vintage of Bootleg Society Cab! The resulting wine is beautifully balanced and is drinking wonderfully right now. And while his dad might've favored varietals like Touriga, Bastardo, and Tinta Cao, Stuart concludes: "This wine is certain to please even the most cynical among us, and I think even my dad would have enjoyed the wine." We know one thing for certain here at Hi-Time-- we are big fans! It's one of those wines that when our buyer Dan tasted it, he immediately had the other buyers taste it, knowing he found The One and that our April would be much tastier!
The nose is filled with rich, red and dark berry scents, ripe cherries and mixed raspberries as subtle earthy spice leads to a beautiful layer of rose garden nuances. Captivating nose! The palate reiterates the incredible mixed berries and fruits that crescendo with full flavor-- but the body is equally prepared as light acidity and tannins provide excellent support, highlighting and balancing the gorgeous fruit flavors. This is easy-going, delicious, affordable and exactly the kind of wine we like to feature at our Wine of the Month.
St. Amant's vineyard is "Certified Green" under the Lodi Rules for Sustainable Winegrowing. The Lodi Rules takes a comprehensive approach to address the overall health of the vineyard and ecosystem. The farming standards go beyond just pest management to promote practices that enhance biodiversity, soil and water health, and employee safety.
