Made at a distillery that has been family-owned for 3 generations, the rums journey begins by fermenting molasses that is produced from processing sugar cane that is grown on their estate with yeast created in their lab. Ron Abuelo is then distilled and aged for a minimum of 12 years in American Oak. Every aspect of production is controlled by Varela Hermanos. The nose shows smoky caramel, allspice, wet straw, roasted almonds, tea, vanilla, fresh cut lumber, honey, wood tannin and spiced, baked fruits. These scents achieve equilibrium on the palate in a drier than expected mouthfeel that intricately displays a myriad of wood nuances. The finish is dry, savory and woody with earthy vanilla, toffee and baking spices lingering. This is a complex, dry, well-aged rum. Try it neat or with ice.

Abuelo 12
Fabulous rum with same unique flavor as the 7 year version but smoother. I actually prefer the 7 because it has more flavor but rougher in a great way and a rare quality bargain in rums.
