We secured a killer deal on Ramos Pinto 2017 Late Bottled Vintage Unfiltered Port. Late Bottled Vintage Ports already provide an excellent value on their own, but we are making a sweet deal even sweeter!
The Hi-Time Staff tasted the 2017 Ramos Pinto Late Bottled Vintage Port and were delighted-- dark ruby in color, excellent body and moderate tannins lead to a luscious and opulent palate with flavors of plum, blueberry, vanilla, dates, dark chocolate, blackberry, maple and black cherry. This is a young colt of a port now; it is vibrant and enjoyable but can also be cellared for years to come.
DECANTER 95 POINTS - "A regular medal winner at DWWA (Decanter World Wine Awards), this is a traditional LBV from an excellent year. Foot-trodden aged for years in wood before bottling without filtration. This wine has power and depth, with fresh, tight-knit fruit and gentle peppery-spicy grip. It already shows considerable floral finesse but will age and soften in bottle if laid down for another five years. Drinking Window: 2022 - 2032"
For those new to the world of Port, this is a great introduction. Late Bottled Vintage Ports (or LBVs for short) are an alternative to "Vintage Ports." Late Bottled Vintage Ports are also from a single vintage, but aged in barrel for 4-to-6 years until bottling (whereas Vintage Ports are bottled after 2 years in barrel), and LBVs arrive ready to drink (unlike Vintage Ports which may require cellaring for years or decades). Some Unfiltered Late Bottled Vintage Ports can also be aged further (like the one we are offering today). LBVs also come in at a fraction of the price compared to Vintage Ports, which can range from $60 to $200 and upwards. We are offering Ramos Pinto 2017 Late Bottled Vintage Port at the incredible price of $15.99!
As this is an Unfiltered Port, there will be a touch of sediment so we recommend decanting, or standing up the bottle a day prior to drinking, to allow the sediment to fall to the bottom of the bottle. This LBV Port can also be enjoyed after opening for a minimum of two weeks, up to a month, provided it is kept at a cool temperature. Enjoy on its own, or with cheeses like Sharp Cheddar, Smoked Gouda, fruit tarts, nuts, chocolate, a grilled steak and for some a Cigar is apropos.
Declared a classic Port Vintage, the year 2017 in the Douro region was characterized by a hot and dry growing season. The profile of the 2017 harvest is ripe, rich and scented. This crop will be remembered for the grapes' speedy maturation and the intensity of the harvest.
The grapes for this LBV, from Ramos Pinto's Quintas (estate) of Ervamoira and Bom Retiro, are harvested by hand in small containers and taken to the lagares (open-top stone vats) and are foot-trodden. Fermentation lasts from 3 to 5 days. The wine is then aged in Vila Nova de Gaia, in casks of approximately 15,000 litres. The blend was made in May 2021 and bottled in September of the same year. The 2017 LBV is a traditional unfiltered Late Bottled Vintage, preserving the existing fruit and with great aging potential.
Founded in 1880 by Adriano Ramos Pinto, the company quickly earned a reputation for its outstanding Ports and innovative winemaking techniques. A trailblazer in the field, Ramos Pinto was one of the first to invest in vineyards in the Douro Valley and bring new grape varieties to the area, establishing a new benchmark for creativity and quality. In 1990, the renowned French Champagne house Louis Roederer (the house that brings us Cristal) purchased Ramos Pinto. This acquisition enriched this port house with additional resources and knowledge, allowing Ramos Pinto to improve its production methods and widen its audience.
Serious Port drinkers are savvy to the incredible value of LBV Ports, as they are aware of their quality and excellent value. Try one today, or save for later. It will also make for an awesome gift with Father's Day just around the corner.
