JEB DUNNUCK 94 POINTS - "The 2019 Rosso Di Montalcino is ripe but energetic, with pure red cherry, rose petal, orange peel, and white pepper. It is medium-bodied, with elegant ripe raspberry with a graceful feel. Seamless, with fine tannins, it is supple and soft in its texture and raises the bar in a big way for the category."

Pian dell'Orino is one of the modern classics in Montalcino. Their Brunellos are fine, tightly woven and elegant, with the precise array of aromas of which great Sangiovese is capable. This 'Rosso' is a purer expression of the house style, essentially a Brunello exposed to less oak and oxygen! It reflects the superb combination of ripeness and crunchy-crisp structure that the vintage provided. It's firm and compact, with subtle and youthful aromas of forest berries, balsam (woody & resinous), and 'stony' minerality at the forefront. The mouthfeel leans toward juicy, with a medium-full, warmly vinous body, along with a sense of grounding from the moderate amount of fine tannin, which comes along with the flavor of ripe skins and that 'stony' minerality on the finish. Aerate for an hour, or hold for several years and you will be rewarded with a more open and complex experience! Partner with simply-prepared dishes: steak in a red/pink peppercorn Sangiovese sauce or classic Tuscan herbed lentil dishes.

The gorgeous and Certified Biodynamic Pian dell'Orino estate in Montalcino sits adjacent to the famed property of Biondi-Santi. In 1996, Caroline Pobitzer purchased the Pian dell'Orino property, and brought German-born Jan Hendrick Erbach on as winemaker. Erbach worked as an enologist in his home country and made wine in France. They married years later. Together they run the Pian dell'Orino winery with a fanatical commitment. As a relatively young winery, Pian dell’Orino has only begun to receive critical attention from the wine critics. But oh what attention! Antonio Galloni waxed poetic: “It is amazing how far Pian dell’Orino has come in just a few years. Proprietors Jan Erbach and Caroline Pobitzer own what is now one of the very top estates in Montalcino, hands down. Tasting the wines from barrel is an amazing experience equaled by visits in only a handful of top domaines in the world. In this cellar, Sangiovese boasts striking finesse and crystalline purity… Readers who haven’t discovered Pian dell’Orino are in for a treat.”
