Anybody who has been in our store asking for California Chardonnay and Pinot Noir recommendations has surely heard us mention the wines of Peake Ranch. This producer has previously been on our domestic "Top Wine" list in both 2018 and 2021, and judging by these new releases, there's a good chance that they will be on the list this year!
Peake Ranch is a boutique, family-run winery owned by John and Gillian Wagner. Like all of us who have visited Santa Barbara County, the couple fell in love with the beautiful countryside and the friendliness of the people. They purchased Peake Ranch with a vision of building a winery and a house on the property, and producing extraordinary wines. They also bring a humbleness and sense of humility, which is honestly quite refreshing. They are already receiving rave reviews from the critics, and considering this is only their seventh vintage, this is an impressive feat!
JEB DUNNUCK 94 POINTS - "Winemaker Wynne Sargeant had some big shoes to fill taking over the reins from Paul Lato, but she has unquestionably risen to the occasion and today is making some of the finest wines in the Central Coast. The estate is in the warmer, eastern side of the Sta. Rita Hills, and they produce a number of single vineyard Chardonnays as well as Pinot Noirs (from the Sta. Rita Hills and Santa Maria Valley) and brilliant Rhône blends. The wines are superb across the board."
"Ripe black cherries, fresh cut roses, wild strawberries, and spicy notes all emerge from the 2021 Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills, another silky, seamless, impressive Pinot Noir from this team. It's a brilliant value in Pinot Noir that would whomp many a Premier Cru Burgundy."
ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE 93 POINTS - "The 2021 Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills is bursting with aromas of pomegranate, cranberry, blood orange, potpourri and underbrush. The medium-bodied palate is silky and perfumed with irresistible juiciness and a long, flavorful finish. It's dangerously easy to drink without sacrificing nuance and spicy detail. 931 cases produced."
