The original PatrĂ³n Tequila was produced by Casa 7 Leguas, one of the oldest Mexican distilleries. St. Maarten Spirits (owners John Paul DeJoria and Martin Crowley) purchased the brand rights in 1989 and helped to change the perception of tequila. They produced high quality, more expensive (especially in the early 1990s!) 100% blue agave tequila when gold "mixto" tequilas were more the norm.
Nose: lovely, vegetal aromas of cooked agave; think grass and green peppers. It's a little earthy, too, with hints of eucalyptus. It really gives a sense of the terroir (or tierra) of Jalisco.
Palate: roasted agave and white pepper; underneath a nice vanilla bean note is accompanied by a hint of anise.
Finish: Dry and agave-heavy, with a bit of a spicy kick and a long, savory finish.
