ORGANICALLY FARMED
90% Nerello Mascalese, 10% Nerello Cappuccio
This rustic-but-finessed Etna red comes from the oldest vines in the family's original Santo Spirito district plots, still producing fruit after over 100 years (and on their own roots). According to the winery, it takes more than a single plant's fruit to make a bottle of this! The fruit is fermented, then aged 2 years, all in fancy 500-Liter Taransaud oak egg-shaped barrels! Give this about an hour to open up in the decanter.
KERIN O'KEEFE 95 POINTS - "The stunning 2019 Etna Rosso Prefillossera from Palmento Costanzo opens with heady aromas of crushed rose petal, wild herb, red fruit and spice. Made with 100-year-old plants, a blend of 90% Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio, the palate is elegant and savory, with wonderful precision and freshness that lift juicy Marasca cherry, wild raspberry, star anise and a hint of vanilla before a salty mineral close. It has a weightless quality thanks to gossamer tannins that delicately support the rich, juicy fruit, spice and mineral flavors while bright acidity keeps balanced. Drink through 2031. VINOUS 94 POINTS - "The 2019 Etna Rosso Prefillossera is dark and moody in the glass. A whiff of dusty clove and rose blows off to reveal dried black cherries and hints of brown spice. It's surprisingly juicy and energetic in feel yet still boasts velvety textures as masses of dark red fruits and mineral tones wash across a core of brisk acidity. This finishes long, leaving a staining of primary concentration, fine-grained tannins and nuances of sour citrus and tart blackberries. This is a gorgeous Etna Rosso Prefillossera, yet it will require patience to blossom fully." - Eric Guido Drink from 2025.
JAMES SUCKLING 94 POINTS - "Concentrated nose of ash, cedar, red cherries, cloves, praline and orange zest. Polished, with medium body and firm, creamy tannins. Long, beautifully rounded yet firm finish."
"In 2010 the Costanzo Family purchased an old Palmento nestled in the heart of the Contrada Santo Spirito, not far from the Passopisciaro village, on the famous North side of Mt Etna, along with a few hectares of old, pre-phylloxera vineyards. Following a careful and respectful restoration of the Palmento, the Family purchased the remaining hectares around the winery and replanted them using the same restorative philosophy that inspired the architecture of the Palmento: planting exclusively native grapes of the area (Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, Carricante, and Catarratto), and using the ancient local “Alberello” system. Lastly, they purchased a small plot in Contrada Cavaliere, in the South-western side of the Volcano, well known for its Carricante vineyards.
The main tenet of their winemaking style is simple: the greatest wines can always be found at the intersection of pure varietal character and clear sense of place. To obtain this result and respect Etna’s singular terroir, all single vineyards are harvested and fermented separately, using only native yeasts. Aging takes place following the same philosophy, either through stainless steel tanks, cement vats or neutral Slavonian large oak vats.
Today, Palmento Costanzo is run by Valeria Costanzo, her daughter Serena and an excellent team of local professionals lead by Sicilian winemaker Nicola Centonze. Farming is certified organic, and the entire winery has been recognized by the prestigious Equalitas Certification Program for its low environmental impact and virtuous social and economic practices." - LUCIDITY WINE MERCHANTS
