95% Sangiovese & 5% Malvasia Nera
This is a good-old-fashioned Riserva, made using a traditional method of submerging the Sangiovese skins in the wine to slowly extract for 4+ months. The wine is then aged for 3 years in a mix of seasoned oak barrels. This all leads to an earthier, more brooding character that's firmly in the savory category.
What balances this is the estate's location in Gaiole, high on an isolated knoll in the Chianti Mountains: it gives a sense of elegance and freshness to its earthy, dark-red tones and worn cedar. Importer Oliver McCrum describes notes of "cherries, marzipan, tea, spices, forest floor, a hint of mint," but with everything mingling as one. On the palate, it's broad, savory and mellow. Sangiovese's tangy acidity well tucked into the mouthfeel, giving it an inner, smoldering livliness. In the 2019 vintage, the tannins are softly grainy, giving the wine an approachable demeanor with just a little time in the decanter or glass. This is a wine for dishes like rich wild boar ragu', meat stews with earthy beats, and roasted mushrooms. This is a taste of old Tuscany!
