Mazzei, one of Italy's most prestigious and historic wine families, has a home base at Castello di Fonterutoli in Castellina, but why stop there? The Badiola line represents their collection of vineyards below the high-altitude hilltop in Radda where the Romanesque church, Santa Maria in Colle, has stood since 998A.D.!

The Poggio Badiola bottling is a fantastic value for the quality inside! It's a delicious expression of Radda's mineral-tinged, crunchy-ripe berry character (blackberry, raspberry), mid-weight feel, and a savory-toned, lightly drying finish that cleans the palate. The use of American oak is well-judged, only supporting the fruit character with light kernel notes of cocoa and sweet spice.

JAMES SUCKLING 92 POINTS - "Plenty of berry and crushed-stone character with hints of chocolate and nutmeg. It’s medium-bodied with a solid core of fruit and a lightly herbal undertone. Spicy at the end. "

The Castello di Fonterutoli estate has been in the hands of the Mazzei family since 1435 and is today led by Lapo Mazzei and his sons, Francesco and Filippo. Grapes are hand-harvested and then fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks at 75-84°F. The total maceration period is 12-15 days. Aaged 10 months in small American oak barrels. Intense aromas of red berries and cocoa. On the palate it is soft and smooth with flavors of wild blackberries and raspberries; well balanced, with great depth and a long finish.
