Marco Marengo has found his stride with his Barolos since taking over as 4th generation winemaker twenty years ago. His M. Marengo estate doesn't produce a lot of wine, with only around 17 acres of vineyards, but they strive to make wines that stand out in style. Making use of both briefer fermentations and more French oak than is considered traditional, he joins famous 'modernist' pioneers Altare and Sandrone who sought to make wines that were more forthcoming early on. But everything else is classic Italian winemaking philosophy: wild yeast fermentations; no filtering or clarification; minimal sulfites added to protect the wine; and in the vineyard, herbicides are avoided, with only copper and sulfur spray used as a fungicide.

Marengo's vineyards are all in sites that tend to yield particularly perfume-driven Barolos with a more approachable character compared to other areas. In support of the driving floral and fruit character are spicy accents, from the Nebbiolo grapes themselves as well as from the French oak (typically licorice root, white pepper, clove, and cinnamon). These are expressive wines for sure, with electric vibrancy and tannins that create a scintillating experience for the palate.

Enjoy these wines soon with an hour aeration if you like your Barolos firm, or hold onto them for a couple more years until they are a bit more rounded. Either way, they will cut through your richest of dishes, so go decadent!

The "Hill of Violets" is a famous vineyard near the town of Barolo. Stretched across relatively higher altitudes compared to other Barolo vineyards, it was said that violets bloomed here earliest in the year. The site leads to some exceptionally perfumed wines that are also packed with more power. But with just over 2 acres of vines belonging to Marengo, there aren’t many bottles to go around.
