The Macallan Double Cask 12 Years Old is a honeyed, indulgent and rounded single malt, it's character defined by the unmistakable prominence of the American Oak style. The pairing of sherry seasoned European and American Oak casks combine in a perfect harmony of flavors and natural color. The delicate flavor of American Oak-- vanilla, citrus and light oak-- takes center stage as the traditional Macallan character of rich fruit, sherry and wood spice affords a familiar backdrop. We sampled the Double Cask 12 and Sherry Wood 12 side by side and noticed this exact difference-- the Double Cask really showcased the oak characteristics while the Sherry Wood 12 was much more fruit- and sherry-centric. (Both were excellent, natch). We have long been fans of the 'original' Macallan 12 and are excited that another top notch flavor profile has been added to this age range.
Nose: Forward oak and wood, cereal grains, toffee cream, sweet sherry fruit, citrus zest.
Palate: Honeyed and sweet but woody, oaky with notes of vanilla, orange cream and fresh caramel. The oak shines through in this 12 year whisky with warm brown spices in the lengthy, lush finish.
