This Barolo comes from plots in the upper part of the Meriame vineyard district in Serralunga d'Alba, and shares some things in common with the wines of neighboring Cerretta and Lazzarito. A touch of stony austerity and black licorice root, common in these parts, adds to Meriame's tendency for medium-full-bodied, soft-textured wines with concentrated dark fruits. In 2019 there's a juicy red-fruited accent to that, like baked strawberry, along with a mouthwatering citrus character in the end. Copious, but fine-grained tannins contributes further toward the wine's steely, energetic counterpoint to the fruit. Serralunga indeed!
Decant for a couple hours and pair this with some mid-weight, but richly flavored dishes like truffle risottos and wine-braised beef or game.
KERIN O'KEEFE 94 POINTS - "The Luigi Vico Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba boasts delicious, juicy red fruit, blood orange and baking spice flavors. It’s still nervous, tight and tannic but already balanced, with bright acidity and a backbone of fine-grained tannins. Great energy, with a licorice close.
