ORGANICALLY FARMED
We are always happy to have a new release from Juan Gil out of the Gil Family Estates portfolio and tend to mention this each time we write up their latest and greatest. Why? They have a solid track record of making great wines and offering them at extremely reasonable prices. We've touted this Silver Label Monastrell before and always drool when Clio or Nido are in town (or many of their other stellar selections) with a new bottling. This one may be the best Silver Label Monastrell we've had from Juan Gil! It really is stunning wine. And it's been certified organic since the 2018 vintage...
(In 2019 Spain accounted for 27% of the World's organic certified vineyard area totaling about 299,000 acres or 13% of the country's total vineyard area. And certification of organic vineyards has been growing at about 16% per year since 2005).
The nose is filled with bright red fruits, think ripe plum and freshly-picked cherries, with solid background scents of rosebush, garden loam and a touch of citrus. The wine's color is a striking deep-hued red and is easy on the eye. The mouthfeel is lush and viscous but kept light on the tongue with ample acidity and smooth tannins. The fruit nosed a moment ago reiterates itself when tasting: red berries and cherries with a touch of brown spices. Pair with pizza, grilled meats, hearty and meaty stuff (lamb, game, etc.).
We don't see a lot of pure Monastrell wines (the grape is more commonly known as Mourvèdre) but after tasting this one, you might join us in looking for more. It has the brighteness of fruit and the user-friendliness of a Rhône blend and is both pretty and pretty serious. We are smitten. And, as always, stratospheric value, once more, from Juan Gil. Out of this world!
