St. George Spirits in Northern California has been distilling Eau de Vie since 1982, but didn’t start making vodka until 2001—they were practicing for almost 20 years. Making a “neutral” vodka is easy —just distill a bunch. But to have a vodka that is rich, flavorful and still crisp and clean is a master stroke. Hangar One is a master stroke. The secret is the blend of pot-distilled viognier grapes and column-distilled American wheat. The viognier eau de vie adds bright, floral aromas and a creaminess to the mouthfeel while the wheat is crisp, light and clean, achieving a balance and beauty that is not often experienced in vodka. The nose has a slight sweetness with scents of young pears, vine blossoms, citrus, white grapes and dry cocoa with crisp grain hinting in the background. The palate is lightly creamy and round with the flavors finely presented in fantastic proportion. The finish shows a slight warmth and clean restatements of the flavor. This is extraordinary vodka; try it on the rocks, with soda or in a tasty cocktail-- it is only limited by your imagination.
