99 Points - IWSC (The International Wine and Sprits Competition)
Equipoise: "A state of balance."
We are always thrilled when a new rum from Foursquare is released... it's hard to find any distiller who has made more of an effect on their category of distillate than Richard Seale has with his Foursquare rums. He is brash, opinionated and brilliant-- our Scottish pals would say braw! He champions additive-free rums and is fiercely proud of his Barbadian roots and heritage. His incredible wife Gayle is also a major proponent (and unbridled force of nature!) for the distillery and the worldwide rum family. We loved hosting Richard and Gayle (along with our friends from Altamar Brands!) at a recent Foursquare tasting when we (and 25+ of y'all!) were able to taste Equipoise before it went on its sea voyage. We were smitten from the first sip-- and would recommend trying a small sip neat for your first foray-- you may not believe that 122 proof can be so smooth, clean and flavorful... but the proof is in the glass!
This is a Double-Maturation Single Blended Rum, consisting of both Artisanal Pot and Traditional Twin Column Coffey distilled molasses rums. Aged first for ten years in Ex-Bourbon Barrels, then four additional years in Ex-Calvados Casks. All aging, blending and bottling occurring entirely on-site, at Foursquare Rum Distillery in Barbados. Bottled at 61% abv (122 proof).
Tasting Notes [IWSC]
"Enticing aromas of leather and olive oil greet the senses, leading to a tantalizing blend of citrus peel, cinnamon, oak, dark chocolate, and nutmeg. Plummy, spiced fruit dances on the palate, upon a soft, sweet mouthfeel. A dry, tangy finish lingers, revealing layers of caramel, banana bread, and tobacco. Luxurious and long-lasting."
The International Wine & Spirit Competition is an annual wine and spirit competition founded in 1969. Each year the competition receives entries from over 90 countries worldwide. The awards given by the competition are considered as high honors in the industry. The judging process consists of blind tasting and panel discussion.
