The freshly arrived "Rina Russa" Frappato from Sicily's Santa Tresa winery absolutely overdelivers for the price! It sports a bright ruby hue, sleek texture, mouthwatering acidity, and ebullient aromas and flavors of baked strawberry, high-toned spiced cranberry, rosewater, and crushed stone/white pepper... you might think of it as Sicily's Pinot Noir! With just a smattering of lightly grippy tannins, it's delicious with grilled veggies and meaty fish, stuffed bell peppers and pasta with sun-dried tomato sauce. If you want to go all out, the winery recommends Sarde a Beccafico, a baked dish of fresh sardines stuffed with a mixture of breadcrumbs, currants, pine nuts, garlic, and a squeeze of lemon!
The Santa Tresa winery was founded in the 1990s by siblings Stefano and Marina Girelli, who come from a winemaking family in the far north of Italy. They fell in love with the old hamlet of Santa Tresa (a Sicilian shortening of "Teresa") in the island's southeastern Vittoria region, and gave it new life. Today they have an extensive line of wines that show off this ancient winemaking region in a clean, precise style. The Rina Russa ("red sand") bottling is named for the distinctive iron-rich soils on which the Frappato vines are planted.
