Once again, one of our favorite Spanish wines arrives just in time for the holiday season. Bodegas El Nido's 2022 Clio may be their best iteration yet-- showcasing the terroir of Jumilla, the famed region in southeastern Spain, through the joyous fruit flavors that Monastrell (70%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (30%) can impart. Of course we have to (again) mention that this comes from the Gil Family Estates family of fine wines-- a name we look for when perusing Spanish wines in general.
In the highlands of Jumilla, they demonstrate their strength from the vineyard. Their roots pierce the stony soils, penetrate the coarse, limestone layer and touch the sandy strip. These tenacious vines, planted on slopes and that receive little rain, have achieved the strength to deal with nature in the tense balance for survival. Their tireless desire to produce intense and impetuous grapes, is enhanced over time. This is why we look forward to Clio each year-- we know these vines are getting better with time...as does this lovely, drinkable, food-friendly wine.
The 2022 Clio leads with a nose of dark red fruits, incense, balsa wood, dark florals and a touch of scrub brush and light minerality. Depth! The palate starts with dark red fruits enveloped in a viscous mouthfeel that is moderated by forward tannins and acidity. Notes of cherry cola, raspberry coulis and red fruit leather are aided by hints of scrub brush, light spice, garden soil and a touch of mineral. This year's vino may be a bit leaner and more focused, palate-wise, and we are loving it! The fruit is still forward but is able to express itself in deeper ways as the secondary and tertiary elements create a chorus of support aided by appropriate body. We're not sure how they do it, but each year they bring continuously exciting, vibrant wine under the Clio moniker and we (and all who imbibe in this joyous juice!) benefit greatly.
