“There are over 160 years of blending experience in every drop.” That is a nice tag line, but Dewars has been a leading, top-notch blended Scotch the whole time! Dewar's Signature is a masterful blend to exemplify that history while keeping Aberfeldy as the heart, incorporating fine, extensively aged whiskies from all of the regions of Scotland. This treasure was created by Thomas Aitken, 6th Master Blender for Dewars and all of the secrets were passed on to and are now carried out by Stephanie Macleod, 7th Master Blender for Dewars; their roles, as Master Blenders, are so significant to this whisky it is their “Signature” that is required on every bottle—John Dewars would be proud. The aromas reveal berries, fudge, cut flowers, cacao, rich-ripe plum, sultanas, raisins, apples and honey with vanilla, integrated spices, divinity, toffee, nut honey and raisin cake—yes it is a little overwhelming... One of the surprises is that the palate shows all of the aromas in a quiet, fresh and balanced manner, held in a creamy mouthfeel and brilliantly checked with mouth-warming spice. The finish is long (and I mean long!) showing toasted nuts, oak, rich spicy wet grain, dry vanilla and honeyed malt that incrementally diminishes. Try this neat, in appropriate glassware, with time to enjoy.
Tasting NoteS
Nose: Honey, dried peels, toasted oak and stewed plum. A soft hint of strawberry jam and old oak furniture too.
Palate: Hobnob biscuits, more red berry sweetness, sandalwood, toffee and treacle.
Finish: A slow build of Christmas spices on the finish, paired with orchard fruit and mint leaf.
