Representing its home in the warm hills of southern Montalcino, near the town of Castelnuovo dell'Abate, the Pianrosso Brunello shows the full-bodied, richly-textured side to Sangiovese. What really distinguishes the wine, though, are the vivid aromas, core of fine mineral sensations, and elegant textures throughout. You get a mouthwatering rush of aromas and flavors like vibrant raspberry liqueur and juicy cherry set against refreshing aromatic herbs; warm spices contrasting with colorful florals; and smoldering, earthy, woodsy, leather and coffee background notes. With the lengthy 3-year oak aging, these elements are coaxed into mingling more as a whole. Bottle age mellows the fruit, creates more savory tones, and rounds the edges. "If you want to experience the energy, elegance and age-worthy structure that first drew wine lovers and collectors to Brunello di Montalcino decades ago, then 2013 is your vintage." - Kerin O'Keefe. Some call the 2013 vintage more "classical," cooler overall than 2019, but with an extended, warm ending. The 2013 Pianrosso is still in the fuller-bodied style of the site, there's more finesse and poise; the structure of uplifting acidity and fine-grained tannins is more prominent than in hotter years. This creates a feeling of greater inner tension, shaping and driving the flow on the palate. This vintage also gave more voice to lifting savory saline and fresh herbal top notes, along with 'crushed limestone' mineral sensations from start to finish. These create a tantalizing contrast with the warmer resinous (musk, incense...), gourmand (caramelized, roasted chestnut...) and earthy forest floor tones that are slowly coming forward with age. This is in a fantastic place to either enjoy now or age further! It also benefits from about an hour or so of breathing time outside the bottle. Organically Grown.
WINE ENTHUSIAST 98 POINTS 'CELLAR SELECTION' - "Wild-berry, fragrant purple-flower and crushed aromatic herb aromas mingle with whiffs of tilled earth and new leather on this dazzling red. The stunning, savory palate boasts remarkable finesse combined with an age-worthy structure, offering succulent black cherry, raspberry compote, licorice and tobacco alongside taut, refined tannins. It's impeccably balanced, with bright acidity. It's already tempting, but hold for even more complexity. Drink 2021–2033." - Kerin O'Keefe
WINE ADVOCATE 95 POINTS - "Although this wine is not labeled as a riserva, it is released six years after the harvest as if it were one. The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso (with 20,000 bottles produced) opens to balanced fragrances that mix fruity elements with spice, crushed stone and smoke. This wine is linear and direct with firm tannic support at the back. Give it another few years to flesh out further with additional bottle aging."
