Chartreuse is a French herbal liqueur, made by Carthusian monks at their distillery in Aiguenoire. It is named after the monks’ Grande Chartreuse monastery, located in the Chartreuse Mountains north of Grenoble. The liqueur was first made in 1737 according to instructions written down in an old manuscript, and is composed of 130 different herbs, plants and flowers.
