With the core of their vineyards on calcareous sandstone soils (Pietraforte) on a ridge of Panzano's famous Conca de Oro amphitheate (and a smaller vineyard in north Castellina), Castello di Rampolla's wines have warm, earthy - but not overripe - dark-toned fruit profiles. There's an elegance in the delivery, rather than overt power of fleshiness, which allows for the complex array of aromas to show themselves more intensely. It's all gently shaped by a moderate structure of vibrant inner acidity and supple tannins.
JAMES SUCKLING 95 POINTS - "This is a fantastic Chianti Classico with so much complexity and intensity. Cherry, chocolate, hazelnut and wet earth with some black truffle. It’s medium-bodied with depth of fruit and fantastic texture and length. Don’t miss this. Sangiovese, cabernet sauvignon and merlot. Unfiltered. Very drinkable now, but one for the cellar."
WINE ENTHUSIAST; KERIN O'KEEFE 94 POINTS - "Juicy and delicious, this opens with aromas of iris, rose, dried aromatic herbs and wild berries. Smooth and medium-bodied, the palate features succulent Marasca cherry, ripe raspberry, ground clove and crushed mint set against taut, fine-grained tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced. Drink 2023–2028. Alcohol 14%. (May 2022)"
