Tasting Notes
Caffo Anisette is a traditional and hyper regional anise liqueur produced by the Fratelli Caffo Distillery in Limbadi, Italy. Fratelli Caffo has been distilling this Calabrian anisette since the 1950s from two varieties of local black anise seeds and tops along with a proprietary blend of rare spices. Because real anise contains an essential oil called anethole, the addition of water creates a very mild clouding effect known as louche, commonly referred to as the “ouzo effect.”
Distilled in an alembic copper pot still, the resulting liqueur displays aromas of apricot, star anise, lemon, and candied fennel on the nose. The silky palate provides mint, star anise, angelica root, and cacao with a finish that calls to brighter, candied fruit notes of lemon and Indian mukhwas candy. This incredible liqueur shows unparalleled delicacy and nuance, showcasing the often polarizing flavor of anise in a particularly inviting composition. Non-chill filtered; 30% ABV.
