Our Wine of the Month #2 for September is a darkly-toned, vivacious Barbera from the Langhe hills of Piedmont, Italy. The small, family-run Ca' del Baio winery wins us over regularly for their Barbarescos, but their humble "Paolina" Barbera d'Alba stands out for its honest character and quality for the price! With its soft, generous and warming mouthfeel, ever-propelled by a mouthwatering, inner vibrancy, it's easy to see why Barberas like this are so popular!

Despite an abv of around 15%, the "Paolina" Barbera is bold without being heavy, delivering a surge of vibrantly juicy dark cherries in alcohol and a soft, stony minerality. An herbal tinge like sage and a lightly rich, almondy tone in the background give a classic Italian counterpoint to the fruit. After quickly building in richness on the palate, the juicy acidity and fine-grained grip rein it in for a dry, lightly mineral finish, enlivened by the echoes of that herb-tinged, sun-kissed fruit. It really revs up the appetite for moderately-aged sheep or goat cheeses, mortadella & smoky speck, hearty pizzas (sausage and mushroom) and stuffed pastas with tomato sauce! Try it at a cool 63F.

Founded in 1870, the Ca' del Baio estate is in its 4th generation of ownership by the Grasso family. They belong to The Green Experience, which certifies that the winery works to maintains the thriving ecosystem of the Langhe hills region, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This includes organic farming practices and the reintroduction of pollinating insects.
