Born in Michoacan, Mexico, winemaker Edgar Torres has lived in the coastal town of Cambria, California since the age of 8. As it seems to happen to many people who live close to Paso Robles, he fell in love with wine and decided to make his livelihood in the wine business. Hey…can you blame him?!? He has worked with many of the superstars of the Central Coast, including Matt Garretson, Augie Hug, and Alta Maria Vineyards. Today, he is the assistant winemaker at Barrel 27, and works alongside one of our best friends, McPrice Myers (what a mentor!), when Edgar isn’t tinkering on his own wines. We sampled his latest releases a few months ago, and they really knocked our socks off! The intensity of these wines are rivaled by few here in the United States, and we suggest you check out what Edgar can do!

“E-Squared” is a nickname given to Edgar and his sister Erika by their parents, and it's a blend of Erika's favorite grape (Syrah) and Edgar's (Grenache). The E-Squared has become one of Edgar's most popular wines, and one he has made for several years in a row now. This year, the wine is a blend of 50% Grenache and 50% Syrah, with all the grapes coming from the Kimsey Vineyard in Ballard Canyon. In just the past four years, Kimsey has presented itself as one of the premier Syrah vineyards in Santa Barbara County! Aged for 20 months in 50% new French oak, the E-Squared shows a huge bouquet of chocolate covered blueberries and white pepper, dark flowers, coffee, and milky chocolate. The pallet brings sweet chocolate components, spice, dark cherries, blueberries, and savory notes. I would give this wine time for its full beauty to shine through, or air if you can’t wait to drink it. This wine can be cellared for 7-9 years. Enjoy with grilled game meats, and even grilled tuna.
