WINE ADVOCATE - 92 POINTS The 2021 Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Spatlese is clear and fine on the pure and slightly smoky nose that displays bright fruit with terroir-driven earthy notes. Clear and crystalline on the palate, this is a lush yet savory, saline and stimulating, precise Spätlese with fresh and slightly greenish, crisp and citric fruit. Delicate grip on the medium-sweet and animating finish. 8% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in September 2022.
Johannes and Sebastian Selbach from Selbach-Oster took over the business from Alfred and Rolf Merkelbach in 2020 and started with two excellent vintages. The 2021 Kabinett and Spatlese Rieslings from both Urzig (Wurzgarten) and Kinheim (Rosenberg) are fabulous, especially in the cool and later-ripening vintage of 2021; whereas in 2020, the two Spatlese selections from the Wurzgarten are shining. Also, the mouth-filling 2020 Spatlese trocken from the Kinheim Rosenberg is remarkably good in its combination of roundness and finesse.
